Biographical Information[edit]

Corner infielder Cody Overbeck played in the minor leagues from 2008 to 2014. He spent two years at Triple A, but never played in the majors.

He hit .486 with 13 homers as a high school senior and was 9-1 as a pitcher. He saw limited action as a freshman at Ole Miss (12 for 55, 9 BB, 2 2B, 2 HR) but hit .288/.340/.534 with 14 HR and 58 RBI in 62 games as a sophomore. He tied for 9th in the Southeastern Conference in homers. In 2008, the junior batted .356/.428/.621 with 17 home runs, 51 runs and 59 RBI in 63 contests. He was 10th in the SEC in hits (90), 10th in total bases (157), tied for 10th in home runs and 3rd in HBP (19).

He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 9th round of the 2008 amateur draft; the scout was Mike Stauffer. He hit .272/.305/.459 with 18 doubles, 12 home runs and 57 RBI in 75 games for the Williamsport Crosscutters that summer, though he fielded only .899 at 3B and drew just 12 walks. He was 9th in the New York-Penn League in doubles, was third in home runs (behind Miguel Fermin and Phil Disher and led in RBI (one ahead of Disher). He fielded better (.915) with the 2009 Clearwater Threshers but slumped offensively (.230/.282/.399, 12 HR, 105 K).

He fielded .927 in 2010 and connected for 24 home runs between Clearwater (.302/.380/.553, 41 RBI in 58 G) and the Reading Phillies (.255/.333/.440, 41 RBI in 78 G). He had 29 doubles, 79 runs, 82 RBI and 134 strikeouts, while walking more (52). He was third among Phillies farmhands in runs (behind Anthony Gose and Jiwan James), tied for 4th in doubles (with Jim Murphy and Tagg Bozied), second in home runs (3 behind Bozied), second to Bozied in RBI and third in strikeouts (behind Anthony Hewitt and Domingo Santana). He hit .321 for the Scottsdale Scorpions of the Arizona Fall League. Moving to first base, he started 2011 very well with Reading (.275/.331/.532) and was leading the Eastern League in dingers (18 in 62 G) when he was promoted to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (for whom he hit .279/.331/.416 in 68 G, with 6 more home runs) to match his 2010 home run total. He finished tied for 10th with Moises Sierra, Will Middlebrooks and Chih-Hsien Chiang in the EL in home runs despite only a half-season there. He tied Matt Rizzotti for the most homers by a Phillies minor leaguer and was 6th in RBI (72, between Murphy and Carlos Rivero).

He produced at a .249/.307/.408 clip with 14 home runs and 71 RBI for Lehigh Valley in 2012. He tied for 5th in the Philadelphia chain in RBI and tied Corey Brown for 6th in the 2012 International League in that category. He was just 2 for 17 with two walks and nine strikeouts for the Tigres de Aragua in the Venezuelan League. Returning to the IronPigs in 2013, he hit .255/.307/.450 with 29 doubles and 19 home runs. His walk total was back down (28). He tied Brown for 8th in the 2013 IL in homers and was third in strikeouts (140, after Ernesto Mejia and Jeremy Hermida). In the Philadelphia chain, he finished 6th in doubles, 4th in homers (between Kelly Dugan and Hewitt), 6th in RBI (between Cody Asche and Dugan) and tied Aaron Altherr for second in strikeouts.

He was let go following the 2013 campaign and signed with the independent Bridgeport Bluefish for 2014, with whom he hit .276/.326/.528 with seven home runs and 23 RBI. The San Diego Padres signed him on June 1 and assigned him to the San Antonio Missions, for whom he hit .235/.268/.426 with 13 home runs and 32 RBI in 69 games. Between the clubs, Overbeck hit 20 home runs and had 56 RBI while slashing .249/.287/.460.

Overall, Overbeck hit 126 home runs and had 460 RBI in his career.
