Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Kelly Dugan began his professional career in 2009 and 18 years old. He was originally taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2nd round of the 2009 amateur draft, one pick ahead of catcher John Ryan Murphy, also ahead of infielder DJ LeMahieu and in the same round as third baseman Nolan Arenado. His signing bonus was $485,000. He was signed by scout Shane Bowers.
He hit .366/.455/.527 in 28 games between two clubs his second season, 2010, then two years later, he hit .300/.387/.470 with 12 home runs and 60 RBI in 117 games for the Lakewood BlueClaws. In 2013, he batted .291/.352/.506 with 20 home runs and 59 RBI in 112 games between the Clearwater Threshers and Reading Fightin Phils. That season would prove to be the highlight of his career in affiliated ball. He reached Triple-A for the first and only time in 2015, batting .221/.295/.298 with 2 home runs and 15 RBI in 36 games for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs; he played at two other levels that year, as well. He played in the Chicago Cubs system in 2016 and the Arizona Diamondbacks system in 2017.
After not playing professionally in 2018, he resurfaced in the independent circuit in 2019. In his first year back, he hit .313/.394/.490 in 56 games for the Chicago Dogs, then his average fell nearly 100 points to .218 between the Dogs and the Sugar Land Lightning Sloths of the short-lived Constellation Energy League in 2020. With the Lancaster Barnstormers in 2021, he hit .326/.427/.541 with 15 home runs and 88 RBI in 104 games, then he hit .326/.417/.686 with 23 home runs and 69 RBI for them in 62 games in 2022. Back with Lancaster in 2023, he slipped to a .191 average in 39 games.
He had never been a top prospect in the Phillies chain, however Baseball America ranked him #27, #28, #17 and #17 in the organization in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2015, respectively.
