Biographical Information[edit]
Cheng-Tang Hsu played in the CPBL for 10 years.
Hsu represented Taiwan in the 1983 World Junior Championship and the 1989 World Port Tournament. The Mercuries Tigers signed him in 1990, but they already had star catcher Chung-Nan Tu, so Hsu was a backup catcher in his first 3 seasons. He hit .234/.292/.252 in 1990, .226/.250/.242 in 1991 and .229/.250/.238 in 1992. Hsu and Kun-Sheng Chiang shared the starting catcher spot in 1993 with a .245/.307/.293 batting line, and he hit .203/.265/.228 in 1994. His batting line was .250/.320/.295 in 1995.
The Pingtung native slumped to .218/.244/.271 in 1996, then he bounced back and batted .252/.292/.285 in 1997. He was selected into the 1998 CPBL All-Star Game, and he was 1-for-2. Hsu ended up hitting .246/.264/.280 in 1998 and .240/.285/.279 in 1999. On October 10, 1998, he and Jonathan Hurst became the first pair of battery who were born in the same day of different year. When the Tigers expelled after the 1999 season, Hsu chose to retire.
Overall, Hsu hit .237/.278/.271 with 357 hits and 44 doubles in 10 seasons in the CPBL. He never hit any homers in 597 games in his entire career, and that is still the CPBL record as of 2023.
