Biographical Information

The son of big leaguer Leon Culberson and father of major leaguer Charlie Culberson, outfielder Charlie Culberson won a minor league batting title but peaked at AA.

Culberson played in the 1983 Division II College World Series and was a NCAA Division II All-American outfielder in 1984. He was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 16th round of the 1984 amateur draft. In his first pro season, he played for the Everett Giants (7 for 26, 3 BB, 2B) and Clinton Giants (.258/.355/.408, 22 SB, 4 CS in 70 G). He hit .237/.316/.305 with 18 steals in 21 tries for the 1985 Fresno Giants, while making 8 errors in the outfield. With Fresno again in 1986, he produced at a .275/.343/.375 clip with 22 stolen bases (caught 7 times).

He then spent two years in the Kansas City Royals chain. In 1987, he hit .320/.364/.376 with 47 steals in 56 tries for the Fort Myers Royals. He won the Florida State League batting title by one point over Calvin James and was third in steals behind Kevin Batiste and Ramon Sambo. He was left off the FSL All-Star team as the outfield slots went to Bernie Anderson, Mauricio Nunez, Jeff Baldwin and Leverne Jackson. In his final season, he hit a meek .205/.306/.291 in 45 games for the 1988 Memphis Chicks.
