Biographical Information[edit]

Chang-Rong Chiu played in the CPBL and for the Chinese Taipei national baseball team.

Chiu represented Taiwan in the 1994 Baseball World Cup; he did not get into any games, though. The Taichung Agan signed Chiu when they were founded in 1997. The Taipei native hit .228/.270/.368 in his rookie year with 5 triples. He set the TML record for most at-bats with 423 and hit .234/.281/.366 in 1998. He was the first local player to hit a home run on the first at-bat of a game on September 26. 1999 was Chiu's career year. He batted .297/.339/.513 with a career-high 13 dingers, and won the Gold Glove award for the first time in his career. Chiu led the league in strikeouts in 2000 with 78, and recorded a .249/.295/.449 batting line. He hit .272/.338/.457 and .271/.339/.418 respectively in next two years, but only played 112 games combined. Chiu is the All-time career doubles and triples leader of the TML.

When the two two leagues merged in 2003, Chiu was assigned to the Macoto Gida. His batting line was .240/.288/.368 in his first year with the Gida. Chiu was selected into the All-Star Game in 2004, but he only hit .246/.293/.366 this year. He blasted the second grand slam in the All-Star Game. Chiu hit .266/.331/.403 in 2005, but declined to .228/.292/.340 in 2006. He blasted a solo shot off Len Picota in the Game 4 of 2005 Taiwan Series. The 35-year-old outfielder decided to retire after the 2007 season, as he hit .284/.351/.342 in 75 games.

After retiring, Chiu became the hitting coach for the DMedia T-Rex in 2008. After the T-Rex dissolved, Chiu turned to amateur teams. The CTBC Brothers signed Chiu in 2014. He was their hitting coach from 2014 to 2016, and became the bench coach from 2017 to 2019. After the Brothers fired Scott Budner after the 2019 season, Chiu was named the new manager for the team. The Elephants was 67-51 in 2020 season but lost to the Uni-President Lions in the 2020 Taiwan Series. Chiu was replaced by Wei-Chu Lin after the team blew a 3-1 lead in the Taiwan Series and he was returned back to the bench coach spot. Chiu transferred to the Fubon Guardians after the 2021 season. The Guardians were 46-68 and ranked last in the league in the 2022. They were 48-67-5 and last again in 2023, then he was replaced by Chin-Feng Chen.

Overall, Chiu had hit .253/.306/.400 and 64 home runs in eleven seasons in the CPBL and the TML.
