Biographical Information[edit]

Casey Turgeon is an infielder who played four seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals minor league system. He was drafted in the 24th round of the 2014 amateur draft out of the University of Florida, three years after having been a 22nd round selection by the New York Mets when he graduated form high school.

He played in the Cardinals system from 2014 to 2017, reaching AA in his final season. He had his best year with the Johnson City Cardinals of the Appalachian League in 2014, where he hit .306/.428/.446 in 62 games, although he was coming out of a major college program and facing largely high school players. He was never a regular over the next three seasons, playing with at least two different teams each year, while seeing time at second base, third base and left field. His best batting average was .290 in 28 games of the Palm Beach Cardinals in 2016, but in 2017 he was down to .221, peaking with the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League.

He was released by the Cardinals in mid-July in 2017, and a month later found a job with the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association, hitting .339 in 17 games. He was returning to the country of his ancestors, given that "Turgeon" is a typical French-Canadian name. On September 18th, he as at the center of a controversial play in the 9th inning of Game 4 of the American Association championship series between Winnipeg and the Wichita Wingnuts. With Winnipeg trailing 3-2 with two outs and a runner on second base in the bottom of the 9th, he grounded out to third base to apparently end the game and give the championship to Wichita. But as the players had begun celebrating around the mound, the home plate umpire walked over and told them to stop, as he had called a balk before the ball was hit. The runner was moved to third and Turgeon was given a reprieve. He drove the runner home to tie the score. Winnipeg eventually won it in 17 innings to force a decisive fifth game, which the Goldeyes won as well.
