Biographical Information[edit]
Diminutive infielder Bryant Flete was signed by the Chicago Cubs as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela before the 2012 season, He began his career that year with the DSL Cubs 2 and in 2013 played with both the DSL Cubs and the VSL Cubs. He moved to the United States in 2014, lining up with both the AZL Cubs and the Boise Hawks. In 55 games, he hit .273/.363/.317. He split 2015 between the South Bend Cubs, in the Midwest League, and the Tennessee Smokies, in the Southern League. In 58 games, he hit only .166 with 1 homer and 10 RBIs.
Even though he had spent significant time in AA the previous year, he was back in low Class A in 2016, starting with South Bend and then moving on to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Carolina League. He saw the most playing time he had had so far, getting into 115 games and hitting .246/.324/.365. He played for the Aguilas del Zulia of the Venezuelan League after both the 2015 and 2016 seasons. He began 2017 back at Myrtle Beach and was having his best season so far when on July 13th, he was one of four players traded to the Chicago White Sox in return for P José Quintana; joining him were Dylan Cease, Eloy Jimenez and Matt Rose. he remained in the Carolina League after the trade, moving over to the Winston-Salem Dash. He hit only .228 after the deal (.306 before) to finish the year at .276/.330/.389. He led the league's second basemen with 54 double plays and tied Sam Haggerty for the assist lead (212). He batted .262/.354/.373 that winter for the Aguilas.
In '18, he played for the Birmingham Barons (.240/.348/.318 in 82 G) and Charlotte Knights (9-for-26, 2 2B), making it to AAA. After a rough winter (2-for-27, 6 BB, 3B), he moved to the indy leagues. After batting .360/.445/.427 with 30 runs in 37 games for the Southern Illinois Miners, he was picked up by the Cincinnati Reds. He batted only .254/.378/.341 in 40 games for them mostly back in A-ball. After the 2020 minor league season was wiped out by COVID-19, he returned to the Miners and again did well - .315/.393/.508, 12 2B, 24 R in 30 G).
For the 2022 Florence Y'Alls, he posted a .207/.323/.325 batting line. He had a fine winter at .319/.483/.452 with 38 walks in 51 games, finishing second in the VWL in walks (behind Maikel Garcia, tied with Danry Vásquez). He was with the Venezuelan national team for the 2023 Pan American Games, going 2-for-9 with a walk, hit-by-pitch and a run while being used at DH. In the winter, he was at .262/.407/.431 for Zulia.
