Biographical Information[edit]

Bruce Kern has pitched in the minor leagues and the CPBL.

Kern was 9-2 with a 1.51 ERA in two years of junior college. [1] Transferring to St. John's, he had a 5-4, 6.09 record as a junior. He had a 7-5, 6.23 record as a senior. [2] He was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 23th round of the 2010 Amateur Draft. The scout was Mike Garlatti. [3]

He debuted with the Casper Ghosts in 2010, and he had a 4.68 ERA in 14 games, going 0-3 with a save. Kern was promoted in 2011, and he pitched 54 games as a reliever for A Asheville Tourists and his ERA was 3.74. He was 6-6 with 10 saves and had the fifth-lowest walk rate among South Atlantic League relievers. [4] He was one shy of the SAL lead in appearances, behind teammate Juan Perez. He also tied Brett Bochy, Ronny Morla and Juan Sosa for 10th in saves. Among Rockies farmhands, he tied Sheng-An Kuo and Kenny Roberts for 7th in saves and was 4th in games pitched.

The right-hander only played two games in 2012, spending most of the year on the DL. [5] Kern pitched 11 scoreless innings for the Tri-City Dust Devils in 2013, and he had a 2.41 ERA in 20 games for the Modesto Nuts. However, he struggled in 2014 with the Modesto Nuts (0-4, 5.60 in 29 G) and Tulsa Drillers (0-1, 2 UER in 2/3 IP). Kern then went to the independent Long Island Ducks in 2015 and had a 9-6, 3.51 season. He tied for 5th in the Atlantic League in wins; his 102 K were two shy of the top-ten.

The CTBC Brothers of the CPBL then signed him in the middle of the 2016 season after he had a fine 2.17 ERA (4-1 record) in 18 games with the Ducks, but Kern struggled in Taiwan. He allowed 10 runs in 2 games, so the Brothers released him soon; Nick Additon replaced him. Kern signed a contract with the Brothers again in 2017, and he had a 8-5 record with a 5.16 ERA. Thus, the Brothers released him on August and Rick Teasley replaced him. He was still 8th in the league in wins, between I-Cheng Wang and Scott Richmond. He was 3-3 with a 4.19 ERA that winter for the Charros de Jalisco.

Kern jumped to the Lamigo Monkeys in 2018, and he finally adapted to Taiwanese baseball. He was 13-3 with a 3.28 ERA; he ranked 3rd in ERA (.11 behind Josh Roenicke) and 2nd in wins (one behind Bryan Woodall). He was also selected into the 2018 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched a shutout inning to notch a hold. In the 2018 Taiwan Series, he started in Game 1 but allowed 4 runs in 4 innings.[6] The Monkeys beat the Uni-President Lions in 5 games. The Brothers signed Kern in 2019, but he missed the entire season due to an elbow injury. Kern was released in the middle of the season, and his professional career ended.[7]
