Biographical Information

Brendan Wise is a minor league pitcher who has been on the Australian national team. His brother Christian Wise played for the New Zealand national team.

Wise was picked by the Detroit Tigers in the 8th round of the 2005 amateur draft. Steve Taylor was the scout. He was 2-4 with a 4.87 ERA for the 2005 GCL Tigers, walking only 9 in 57 1/3 IP. He led the Gulf Coast League with 13 hit batsmen and tied for the most runs allowed (39). In the 2006 Claxton Shield, the right-hander allowed 3 hits and 2 runs in 6 1/3 IP for the Western Australia Heelers. In the US, he was 3-6 with a 3.46 ERA for the Oneonta Tigers. He joined the Australian squad for the 2006 Intercontinental Cup, having a 3.86 ERA in three appearances and saving one outing.

In 2007, Wise was roughed up for three runs in two innings in the Claxton Shield. He had a fair minor league season for the Lakeland Flying Tigers (1-2, 3 Sv, 3.12 in 31 games) and Erie SeaWolves (1-0, 5.40 in 2 games). In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, he appeared in five games, with a 5.40 ERA; only Adam Bright pitched more for the Aussies. Against the Dutch national team, he put Raily Legito aboard with a single in the 9th; Legito would score to give the Netherlands a 3-2 lead but Australia would rally to win. Against Canada, he came in during the 9th but allowed both men on; Brad Thomas was able to get out of the jam.

Wise allowed one run in three innings in the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, in which Australia failed to advance to Beijing. He did allow three inherited runners to score in a 7-4 loss to the Mexican national team. He replaced Adam Bright with the bases loaded in the 8th inning of a 3-3 game. Wise immediately hit pinch-hitter Geronimo Gil to force in Jesus Cota. He got Roberto Saucedo to hit into a force at home, but then allowed a RBI single to Carlos Valencia and a run-scoring grounder to Jose M. Rodriguez.

In 2008, Wise pitched for Lakeland (1-3, Sv, 4.64 in 18 games) and Erie (2-1, Sv, 3.30 in 30 games). He was with Australia for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. In the Classic, he came in during the 4th inning of a game against Mexico, replacing David Welch with a 4-0 deficit. Wise hit Jorge Vázquez, allowed a Karim Garcia single then walked Miguel Ojeda. A wild pitch let Vázquez score. Reliever Liam Hendriks replaced Wise and let both inherited runners score, giving Wise 3 earned runs and no batters retired for the event.

In the summer of 2009, Brendan was 1-1 with two saves and a 3.32 ERA in 14 games for Lakeland and 4-1 with 2 saves and a 4.39 ERA in 21 contests for Erie. He was Australia's most-used reliever in the 2009 Baseball World Cup (7 G), going 0-1 with 3 runs in 6 2/3 IP. He combined with Adam Blackley on a shutout of Japan. Against Venezuela, he blew a 4-3 lead to take his loss, walking Lino Connell and giving up hits to Michael Sandoval and Rene Reyes before Tim Cox relieved and let the inherited runners score.

Wise was very sharp in 2010 with the SeaWolves (2-0, 6 Sv, 1.44 in 15 G) and Toledo Mud Hens (4-2, 2 Sv, 2.08 in 28 G) but did not win promotion to the majors. The next year, he was with Erie (0-1, 7 R in 2 IP) and Toledo (5-2, Sv, 1.90 in 50 G). He again did not get the call to the majors, though he had the best ERA of any Toledo hurler with 15+ IP. He led Tigers farmhands with 53 games pitched and tied Josh Judy for 10th in the 2011 IL in appearances. He struggled in the 2011 Baseball World Cup, giving up 5 runs (3 earned) in 4 1/3 IP. He saved a win over Nicaragua but blew a save against the Dominican national team (he wound up with the win when Australia rallied).

Wise signed with the Minnesota Twins for 2012 and spent the year with the Rochester Red Wings but bombed (2-3, Sv, 5.64, 2.09 WHIP). His next stop was as a midseason addition to DOOR Neptunus in the Hoofdklasse; he went 3-0 with a save in 9 relief games, striking out 15 and allowing 6 hits, no walks and no runs in 14 innings. In game two of the 2013 Holland Series, he relieved Orlando Yntema with one on, one out and a 1-1 tie in the 9th and retired 5 of 6 Vaessen Pioniers batters he faced; he got the win when Neptunus rallied to win.
