Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Brayan Bello was signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2017. He began his professional career one year later in the Dominican Summer League, with the DSL Red Sox 2, but before that year was over he was moved to the GCL Red Sox after going 6-2, 1.68 against his countrymen. He added another win in his only appearance in the Gulf Coast League, for an excellent combined line of 7-2, 1.60 with 39 hits allowed in 67 1/3 innings. In 2019, he made 25 starts for the Greenville Drive of the South Atlantic League and was 5-10, 5.43, although he did strike out 119 batters in 117 2/3 innings.

He was then forced to sit out the 2020 season with the minor leagues shut down by COVID-19 and was not high enough on the prospect totem pole to receive one of the few precious invitations to spend the summer at Boston's alternate training site. He returned to action in 2021 and was excellent in his first 6 starts for Greenville, now in the High-A East, going 5-0, 2.27 and earning a quick promotion to the Portland Sea Dogs of the Double-A Northeast. He was invited to the 2021 Futures Game at Coors Field where he pitched for the American League team and finished the year with a record of 7-3, 3.87 in 21 starts, with 132 strikeouts in 95 1/3 innings. He was named the Red Sox's Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

He made his debut for the Red Sox on July 6, 2022 as the starting pitcher against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. He gave up 4 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings to be charged with the 7-1 loss. He had begun the season pitching in AA with Portland, going 4-2, 1.60 in 6 starts, then continued to pitch well in AAA with the Worcester Red Sox, where he was 6-2, 2.81 in 9 games. The next day, he was named to the American League squad for the 2022 Futures Game but was eventually scrapped from the roster. He ended up making 11 starts in 13 appearances for Boston, going 2-8, 4.71. He followed that with a very good season in 2023, when he was arguably Boston's best starting pitcher, finishing at 12-11, 4.24 in 28 starts. He pitched 157 innings and struck out 132 batters.

Heading into the 2024 season, the Red Sox decided to secure his services for the foreseeable future by signing him to a six-year extension worth $55 million, with an option for a seventh year at $21 million.
