Biographical Information[edit]

Bernie Walker played in the minor leagues and CPBL.

Walker was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round of the 1983 January Amateur Draft‎ out of high school and the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 1984 January Amateur Draft‎ out of junior college, but he refused to sign in both times. The Cincinnati Reds then took him in the 14th round of the 1986 Amateur Draft‎, and he hit .298/.416/.375 for the GCL Reds in his first year. He also played 25 games for the A-class Tampa Tarpons, but his batting line fell to .159/.227/.217.

Walker then hit .354/.503/.602 with the 1987 Billings Mustangs and .300/.407/.394 for the Cedar Rapids Reds. He stole 52 bases in 67 tries that year. He was among the Reds' farm system leaders in runs (64, tied Leo Garcia for 9th), triples (6, 4th), walks (66, tied Ramon Sambo for 7th) and swipes (2nd, 9 behind Sambo). His .326 average was the best of anyone with more than 60 PA in their chain, .011 ahead of Jeff Treadway, and his OBP of .447 was again the best; Keith Lockhart was .026 back among those with 200+ PA. He reached AA in 1988, and he collected 19 steals with a .249/.341/.378 batting line for the Chattanooga Lookouts. With 7 three-baggers, he tied for 5th in the Southern League with Gary Cooper, Butch Davis and Chris Jones.

The Texan stole 27 bags with a .238/.369/.314 batting line in 1989 with the Lookouts, and he hit .250/.290/.313in 22 games for the AAA Nashville Sounds. His 61 walks tied Lockhart for 6th in the Reds system while his 34 steals were second, six behind Don Brown, but he was only caught 7 times to Brown's 12. Walker hit .324/.468/.571 with the Charleston Wheelers in 1990, and he played 24 games in the Reds organization and moved to the Kansas City Royals. His batting line was .234/.365/.329 in 54 games with the Memphis Chicks. The Jungo Bears of the CPBL signed him in 1994, and he hit .275/.352/.488 with 7 homers. However, he was 0-for-18 in 1995, and his professional career ended. He had 179 steals and 309 walks in 553 games as a pro.
