Biographical Information[edit]

Audry Perez came to the majors in 2013.

Perez hit .322/.342/.525 in his pro debut for the 2008 DSL Cardinals; he led his team in RBI (40) and homers (7) and then went 3 for 11 for the GCL Cardinals as well. He threw out 44.6% of attempted base-stealers for the DSL Cardinals, the second-best mark in the Dominican Summer League. In '09, he homered 9 times in only 128 at-bats as a backup DH/C for the Johnson City Cardinals (Robert Stock was started at catcher); Perez hit .258/.301/.539. He tied Edgar Lara and Brady Shoemaker (both starters) for 5th in the Appalachian League in dingers. With the 2010 Batavia Muckdogs, he batted .315/.368/.455 with 47 RBI in 45 games. He led New York-Penn League catchers in fielding percentage (.997) and was third in percentage of runners caught stealing (37%). He also was 7th in RBI.

Audry fell to 24.4% of runners caught in 2011, which he split between the Palm Beach Cardinals (.291/.307/.442 in 22 G) and Springfield Cardinals (.261/.279/.430 in 59 G). He drew only 7 walks all year long. He was down to six walks in 81 games for Springfield in 2012 while his batting line was just .263/.281/.346. He was 3 for 17 with two doubles in the Texas League playoffs. Surprisingly given his OBP, he had the 5th-best on-base streak in the TL at 26 games. He threw out 42% of attempted base-thieves, the best rate in the TL, his arm back in form.

Perez hit very poorly again in 2013 with Springfield (.209/.234/.349 in 57 G) and the Memphis Redbirds (.211/.228/.244 in 25 G). He had five walks. His arm remained his top asset as he threw out 39% of base-stealers. The Cardinals made him a September call-up, presumably to add defensive depth at catcher rather than for his bat. In his major league debut on September 15th, he indeed was a defensive sub, replacing Yadier Molina in a double switch in the top of the 8th of a 12-2 blowout against the Seattle Mariners. He did not bat and no Mariner tried to run against him as none reached base.
