Personal Remembrance[edit]
The Appleton Papermakers were in the Wisconsin State League in 1953, and were a farm team of the new Milwaukee Braves, as the Braves had just moved there from Boston. The league was a good quality Class D league. I was a pitcher that year for the Oshkosh Giants in the same league. Appleton had some good players and prospects, whom I remember playing against. Bob Gilmore was a big 6' 4" pitcher with a good hard fastball, and pitched well for Appleton. He was a right-handed pitcher. Another righthander was Tom Tewksbury, who was more of a control and finesse pitcher. Roger VanderWyst was a speedy position player, whom I remember as a contact hitter who was able to beat out a number of infield hits. I believe Don Cross also played there as perhaps the first baseman or outfielder. The League folded after 1953, as the Milwaukee Braves drew too much of the attendance from the league.
