Biographical Information

Left-hander Andrew Werner was a winner in his major league debut, starting for the San Diego Padres against the Pittsburgh Pirates on August 22, 2012. He allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks while pitching in the 7th inning, striking out 2, as the Padres won, 4-2, to complete a three-game sweep of the Pirates. He used a sinker and a change-up to keep opposite hitters off balance, and was removed after giving up a homer to Gaby Sanchez to start the 7th, followed by a walk to Pedro Alvarez, when manager Bud Black took him out after congratulating him for a job well done.

Werner grew up in Washington, IL and attended the University of Indianapolis but went undrafted. He thus headed for the Frontier League, where he pitched for the Evansville Otters in 2009, going 3-2, 5.46. He split 2010 between Evansville and the Windy City ThunderBolts and had a great year, with a record of 11-5, 3.35 in 19 starts. The Padres signed him out of a try-out camp in the fall of 2010.

He made his debut in organized baseball with the Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2011, where he was 2-6, 3.44 in 12 starts. He was promoted mid-year to the California League, where he pitched very well for the Lake Elsinore Storm, going 5-2 with an excellent 3.03 ERA in 13 starts in the strong-hitting circuit. He started 2012 in AA with the San Antonio Missions and while his record was only 4-8, his ERA was an excellent 3.23 in 103 innings to earn him another promotion. He only made 4 starts for the AAA Tucson Padres, with so-so results (1-2, 5.79), when he got the call to the big leagues. He was as surprised to find himself in the Show as anyone, and no one on the big league squad had ever seen him pitch in person.

On November 16, 2012, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics along with Andy Parrino in return for Tyson Ross and A.J. Kirby-Jones.
