Biographical Information[edit]

Abraham Ayala caught in the minor leagues and for the Puerto Rico national baseball team.

Ayala was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 32nd round of the 1998 Amateur Draft out of high school, but he didn't sign. The Houston Astros then took him in the 37th round of the 1999 Amateur Draft out of junior college, and he hit .292/.357/.362 for the Martinsville Astros in his first year. Ayala slumped to .135/.197/.180 in Martinsville in 2001, and he went 5-for-21 with the Pittsfield Astros that season. He went to the New York Mets in 2002, but he struggled again as his batting line was .202/.274/.286 for the Brooklyn Cyclones. He hit .200/.248/.223 for the Hudson Valley Renegades (though he did throw out 41% of those who tried to steal) affiliated with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2003, and that was his last season in organized baseball.

He crushed 4 homers with a .286/.309/.378 batting line for the Pennsylvania Road Warriors in 2004, and he recorded a .282/.327/.354 slash line for the Newark Bears in 2005. He then represented his nation in the 2005 Baseball World Cup, going 1 for 7 with two walks while backing up Hector Kuilan at catcher. Ayala batted .268/.333/.317 for the Sussex Skyhawks in 2006, and his professional career ended. In the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, he was excellent, batting .412/.545/.882 with two homers and five RBI in five games as Puerto Rico won the event and a spot in the 2009 Baseball World Cup. He trailed only Ardley Jansen in slugging, tied for 5th in homers, tied Juan Orellana for third in OBP and was 7th in average (between Willie Vásquez and Edgar Bruzual). His long balls were off Jo Matumoto and Abraham Atencio. He was not named the event's All-Star backstop, as that honor went to Panama's César Quintero.
