Biographical Information[edit]

Abraham Atencio has pitched at times for the Panamanian national team. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he had a 2.20 ERA and allowed 5 hits in 12 1/3 innings. He allowed one run in 6 innings against Nicaragua and two runs in 6 against the Cuban national team, battling Yuniesky Maya and Pedro Luis Lazo evenly; the bullpen got the win against Nicaragua but blew the game against Cuba.

In the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games, Atencio allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in 6 2/3 IP. He gave up 14 baserunners and 7 runs in 5 innings in the 2006 COPABE qualifiers for the 2008 Olympics. In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, the southpaw had one start, allowing two runs in six innings in a win over the Mexican national team and Emil Kamar.

Atencio went 1-1 with a 5.23 ERA in the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, beating Colombia but getting roughed up by Puerto Rico. Atencio was on Panama's roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not pitch in the event. He helped Panama win Gold at the 2010 Central American Games. In the 2011 Baseball World Cup, he was 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA. Against Australia, he took the loss, relieving Gustavo González in the 7th of a scheduled 7-inning game (shortened due to weather) with a 3-2 deficit. He threw a shutout 7th and Panama tied it in the bottom of the inning to force an 8th inning. Thanks to the IBAF Extra Innings Rule, he started with two men aboard. He got one out and allowed one on then Gustavo Gómez took over and allowed the losing hit to Stefan Welch, giving Atencio the decision.

The lefty allowed four hits, a walk and one unearned run in 1 2/3 IP in the 2011 Pan American Games, striking out three in two outings. He retired from Panamanian baseball at the end of 2015 with 70 wins, 5th all-time. His son Abraham Atencio Jr. was a teammate in his final campaign.
