Biographical Information[edit]

Hector Kuilan caught in the minor leagues and for the Puerto Rico national baseball team.

Kuilan was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 8th round of the 1994 Amateur Draft, one pick after Ronnie Belliard. He hit .156/.188/.206 for the GCL Marlins in his first year but threw out 42% who tried to steal. He recorded a .248/.324/.301 batting line there in 1995 (gunning down 48% and fielding .995), and he crushed 6 homers with a .201/.260/.305 batting line for the Kane County Cougars in 1996. He threw out 54%, continuing to demonstrate an amazing arm. Kuilan then batted .226/.255/.287 with the Brevard County Manatees in 1997, but he was 4-for-39 with the AAA Charlotte Knights. He only hit .226/.274/.365 with the Manatees in 1998, and he improved to .252/.261/.346 with the Portland Sea Dogs. Kuilan's batting line was .261/.294/.331 while throwing out 42% for the Sea Dogs in 1999, and he left the Marlins system.

The Puerto Rican signed with the Colorado Rockies in 2001, but he struggled as he went 8-for-43 with the Carolina Mudcats. He also played 68 games for the independent Lehigh Valley Black Diamonds, and his batting line was .283/.302/.415. Kuilan then signed with the Bridgeport Bluefish, and he spent the rest of his career there. He hit .275/.336/.382 in 2002, and he crushed 7 homers with a .280/.316/.448 batting line in 2003. Kuilan then recorded a .271/.324/.376 batting line in 2004, and he blasted a career-high 11 homers with a .235/.284/.398 batting line in 2005. He also represented Puerto Rico in the 2005 Baseball World Cup. Starting behind the dish, he hit .222/.323/.481, handled 80 chances error-free and threw out 4 of 10 who tried to steal. His two homers trailed only Edgard Clemente on the team. He hit .291/.349/.366 in 2006, then his professional career ended. He had hit .245/.290/.350 while throwing out 45%.
