Biographical Information[edit]
Chicago-born Alfred Gerald "AJ" Lewis went to an all-boys Catholic high school in the Windy City. He then played four years of college ball (2017-2020) at three different schools - two universities and a junior college. He also played three years in various Summer Collegiate Baseball leagues: 2017 for the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders of the Northwoods League, 2018 for the West Coast League's Victoria HarbourCats, and 2019 for the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League.
He was eligible for the 2020 Amateur Draft after his senior year at Eastern Kentucky University, the draft that was slashed down to a mere five rounds because of the coronavirus pandemic which threw the baseball world into flux. He went undrafted, but he was signed as an amateur free agent by the Colorado Rockies organization on July 28. He was assigned to the Grand Junction Rockies for the 2020 season, but all minor league seasons were wiped out that by the aforementioned pandemic.
He had to wait until 2021 - his age 23 season - to get his professional career started. His first taste of pro ball came with the Spokane Indians of the rebranded High-A West league. However, he fared poorly in limited action, striking out 20 times in 56 at bats and amassing a .179 batting average. On August 7, he was moved down a level to Low-A West and the Fresno Grizzlies. He got into 15 games for the Grizzlies in the season's final six weeks, mostly as a left fielder.
He was back in the Lilac City to begin the 2022 season, with the league changing its name back to the Northwest League but remaining at the High-A level. He shuffled between the Indians and the Low-A Grizzlies (whose league's name was switched back to the California League), spending two different stints at each level. Overall for the season, he slashed .250/.405/.419 in 50 games while playing left field, first base, second base, third base and catcher.
in 2023, he started out with the Spokane Indians for the third year in succession and had a similar role once again: spelling starters at three infield positions and behind the plate. This year, he was joined by Zach Kokoska, his Orleans Firebirds teammate from four years prior.
