Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Zach Kokoska hit .267 in 14 games as a freshman for Virginia Tech in 2018. As a sophomore at a new school - Kansas State - he improved to .330. His batting average and slugging percentage all improved every year of his college career. (His senior year on base percentage was one point lower than his junior year OBP, otherwise that statistic would have improved every year as well.) He also played two years of Summer Collegiate Baseball with three teams. In 2019, he was on the same Orleans Firebirds squad as AJ Lewis, with whom he'd be teammates in 2023 at the High-A level.
In the 2021 Amateur Draft, the Colorado Rockies organization selected him in the 10th round. After signing on July 26, he was assigned to the ACL Rockies where he played 20 games, amassing a slash line of .395/.458/.535. He moved up to the Low-A Fresno Grizzlies for the 2022 season, but was somewhat inconsistent at the plate. He slashed .202/.288/.354 in the seasons first two months, but followed that with a red hot June in which he slashed .320/.398/.600. He hit .230 in July, but .283 in August. For the season, he ended at .249/.341/.447.
The Rockies moved him up to A+ to begin 2023. After a so-so April for the Spokane Indians, he tore up the Northwest League in May. He slashed .391/.481/.793 that month with 9 home runs, 10 doubles and 25 RBI. In the 25 games he played in May, he went hitless in only five of them and had 13 multi-hit games. Through his first 50 games, he was slashing .335/.442/.642 and had equaled his output of home runs and doubles from his previous season in the California League (13 and 14, respectively) and had only driven in 1 fewer run. All of this while learning a brand new position - first base. 45 of his first 50 games were at first base with only five in left field.
