Season Summary[edit]
For the first time in franchise history, the 2014 Philadelphia Phillies opened their season with an interleague game, traveling to Arlington, TX to face the Texas Rangers for the season opener on March 31st. The game turned out to be a wild one. The Phillies jumped early on Tanner Scheppers, who was making his first career start, putting up a quick 6-0 lead thanks in part to a grand slam by SS Jimmy Rollins (who tied Cal Ripken Jr.'s record of 14 consecutive Opening Day starts at shortstop for the same franchise). However, the Rangers managed to come back and tie the game, but a two-run double by pinch-hitter John Mayberry in the top of the 5th put them ahead to stay as free agent signee Marlon Byrd and 3B Cody Asche also homered. Cliff Lee was the winner in spite of giving up 8 runs in 5 innings as the final score was 14-10.
