1954 East-West Game (Negro League)

From BR Bullpen

The 1954 East-West Game, played August 22, was the 27th East-West Game, and marked the game's 22nd year. Estimated attendance of 10,000 matching the low set the year before. The Negro American League had six teams this year, and the West team was made up of players from the Kansas City Monarchs, Louisville Clippers, and Memphis Red Sox, while the East team comprised the Birmingham Black Barons, Detroit Stars, and Indianapolis Clowns. The West team won, 8-4, giving it a 15-12 edge and its third consecutive victory in the series. Hank Mason (Kansas City) was credited with the win for the West team, and Andy Carpenter (Detroit) took the loss for the East.

The East-West had by now mainly become a showcase for the League's young talent, the NAL having lost most of its established stars since Organized Ball began to desegregate.

The East Stars scored first, ringing up single runs in each of the first three innings off of Isiah Harris, including a home run by the Clowns' "Doc" Dennis, before the West Stars opened a three-run rally in the third to tie it up.

After the East scored one run off of Hank Mason in the fifth to take a lead, the West scored two to take its first lead, 5-4, and then score three more unanswered runs to make the final score 8-4. Herrera was MVP of the game with two singles, a two-run home run in the seventh inning, and four RBI.
