The 1929 New York Yankees played the 28th season in team history. They finished with a record of 88-66, in second place, 18.0 games behind of the Philadelphia Athletics. New York was managed by Miller Huggins until his tragic death on September 25th. Art Fletcher completed the season as manager. The Yankees played at Yankee Stadium.

The 1929 Yankees were the first team to issue uniform numbers for their players (they were quickly joined by the Cleveland Indians, who also had their players wearing numbers on opening day). The Yankees issued their numbers in accordance to their players' place in the batting order. Thus, lead-off hitter Earle Combs wore number 1, followed by Mark Koenig at number 2, Babe Ruth with number 3 and clean-up hitter Lou Gehrig with number 4. The team's three catchers - Johnny Grabowski, Benny Bengough and Bill Dickey (who was a 22-year-old rookie that season) - wore numbers 8, 9 and 10 respectively. Staff ace Herb Pennock was issued number 11 and fellow starters Waite Hoyt and George Pipgras got 12 and 14. There was no number 13 that season, starting a tradition that would be followed by all teams (with a few exceptions) until the 1970s, when the dreaded number became more commonly used.
