Biographical Information[edit]

Zach Samuels was undrafted out of college but made it to AA. He is the son of major leaguer Roger Samuels.

Samuels had a 6-7, 2.72 record with 20 walks in 76 innings in junior college in 2006. He improved to 6-3, 2.16 with a .181 average allowed in 2007. Transferring to UC Santa Barbara, he went 2-3 with a save and a 7.01 ERA. His senior year, he was slightly better (3-3, 2 Sv, 6.14). The Detroit Tigers signed him as an undrafted free agent; the scout was Phil Huttmann.

Samuels was much better in his pro debut than he had been at Santa Barbara, going 2-2 with a 2.56 ERA for the 2009 GCL Tigers. He led Gulf Coast League hurlers in total chances (23) and fielding percentage (1.000). Moving to relief the next year with the West Michigan Whitecaps, he was 4-1 with 3 saves and a 2.98 ERA as a reliable middle reliever. He had just a 1.00 WHIP in 2011, split between the Lakeland Flying Tigers (1-2, 2 Sv, 1.79 in 30 G) and Erie SeaWolves (4 R in 10 IP). He had the best ERA of any Lakeland hurler with 15+ games pitched. He was less effective in 2012, again spent with Lakeland (1 UER in 2 IP, Sv) and Erie (3-1, 5.04 in 16 G). Overall, he had gone 10-6 with 6 saves and a 2.80 ERA in 95 minor league games (10 starts). He had struck out 177 and walked 77 in 215 innings. Detroit then let him go.

Samuels signed with the Czech Republic's Draci Brno club for 2013. He starred as a 1B-P for Draci Brno in the 2013 European Cup. He went 8 for 14 with a double, two walks, three runs and four RBI. On the mound, he was 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA, losing a 2-0 duel to Harry Glynne and the Paderborn Untouchables. He was among the Barcelona Cup's leaders in average (1st, .133 ahead of runner-up Adolfo Gomez), slugging (1st, .018 ahead of Gomez), OBP (1st, .103 ahead of Carlos Hereaud), hits (tied for first with Jendrick Speer and Mario Chiarini), RBI (tied for 4th with Jeffrey Arends and Alex Romero), total bases (tied for third, trailing Bryan Engelhardt and Gomez) and lowest opponent average (4th behind Enorbel Marquez, Owen Ozanich and Nick Veltkamp). He got both Draci Brno hits in a two-hitter by David Bergman) and produced six runs in an upset win over Telemarket Rimini.
