Biographical Information[edit]

Yung-Chih Kuo played in the CPBL for 9 years.

Kuo was drafted by the Sinon Bulls in the first round of the 2001 CPBL Draft, and he soon entered the rotation as a rookie. He was 5-3 with a 4.98 ERA in 15 starts. Kuo only pitched 8 games in 2002 due to injury, and the Bulls turned him into a reliever. He recorded a 3.83 ERA in 24 appearances in 2003, and he also pitched 4 shutout innings in the 2003 Taiwan Series; the Bulls lost to the Brother Elephants in 6 games. Kuo was a swingman in 2004, and he had a 7-9 record with a 3.40 ERA in 35 games. He was the starter of 2004 Taiwan Series Game 2, but he allowed 5 runs in 1 2/3 innings and lost to Don Lemon and the Uni-President Lions. Kuo allowed 2 runs in 1 1/3 innings as a reliever in Game 7, and the Bulls won the title.

The Taitung native was 3-4 with a 3.64 ERA in 46 games in 2005, and he also collected 9 holds. He pitched 2 shutout innings in the 2005 Taiwan Series to help the Bulls sweep the Macoto Cobras. He was named the closer in 2006, and Kuo had his career year. He notched 8 saves in June to break the CPBL monthly record, and ended up collecting a league-leading 17 saves with an elite 2.02 ERA in 37 games. He was also selected into the 2006 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched 1 2/3 innings.

Kuo tied Todd Moser to become the saves leader with 13 in 2007, but his ERA rose to 4.11. He attended the 2007 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched 2 shutout innings. Kuo still collected 11 saves in 2008, and his ERA worsened to 4.33 in 44 games. He had a terrible 5.93 ERA in 15 games in 2009, then the Bulls released him and his career ended. He then coached the Fubon Guardians from 2017 to 2019, and the Guardians named him their pitching coach in 2023.

Overall, Kuo was 27-30 with a 3.80 ERA, notched 21 holds and 45 saves in 280 appearances, struck out 410 and pitched 568 2/3 innings in 9 seasons in the CPBL. Kuo threw a fastball (peak time 90 mph), slider, forkball, changeup, cutter and sinker.
