Ron Allen, one of the only major league position players out of Youngstown State University, was also a big basketball star while at Youngstown. The brother of Dick Allen and Hank Allen, he played in the majors in 1972. Andy Kosco went to law school at Youngstown State, but after he had turned pro, and he did not play baseball there.
Most major leaguers out of Youngstown have been pitchers. Mike Modak was the first Youngstown player to come to the majors, making his debut in 1945.
