Kim played for the South Korean national team in the 1971 Asian Championship, 1973 Asian Championship, 1975 Asian Championship, 1975 Intercontinental Cup and 1978 Amateur World Series. In the 1978 event, he was 0 for 2 with a walk and a run, backing up Hae-jong Park at DH. When the KBO was founded in 1982, he signed with the OB Bears, and he hit .310/.428/.533 with 13 homers. He attended the All-Star Game, and he tied Sung-han Kim and Man-soo Lee for 4th in homers. Kim then hit .291/.373/.466 with 9 homers in 1983, and he was 7th in RBI (between Bong-yun Kim and Dong-kyun Yoon) and 3rd in doubles (tied with Hae-chang Lee, Young-chul Kim and Eikyu Kiyama). He then jumped to the Binggrae Eagles in 1986, but he struggled again as his batting line was .210/.292/.226. Kim announced his retirement after the '86 season, and he became the batting coach of the Eagles in 1988. He was the minor league batting coach of the Bears from 1988 to 1992, and he became the bench coach of the Ssangbangwool Raiders in 1995. When Dong-hwa Han left the team on May 16, Kim was their interim manager. He was the batting coach of Kyung Hee University from 2002 to 2003 and he was named the minor league batting coach of the Doosan Bears from 2012 to 2013 and in 2022.

Overall, Kim hit .278/.375/.445 with 299 hits and 41 homers in 5 seasons in the KBO.
