Wes Grisham was a college star. In 1989, the LSU junio had 201 total bases, tying for third in NCAA Division I, five behind leader Eric Wedge and one behind runner-up Dan Peltier. His 26 doubles tied for 9th, his 85 RBI were 7th and his 19 homers tied Frank Thomas and others for 14th.

Returning for his senior season, Wes batted .360/~.435/.571. He was 6th in the Southeastern Conference in average, barely made the top 20 nationally with 72 RBI and tied Chris Gomez and Todd Greene for 10th in Division I with 100 hits. Baseball America named him an All-American outfielder alongside Jeffrey Hammonds and Mike Kelly.

The Pittsburgh Pirates picked Grisham in the 14th round of the 1990 amateur draft. Assigned to the Welland Pirates, he hit .265/.327/.333 with one homer in his lone pro season, easily outhit by outfield mate Scott Bullett.
