Biographical Information[edit]
Weiqiang Meng has been a catcher for the Guangdong Leopards. He played for China in the 2012 Asia Series and 2012 Asian Championship. In the 2013 World Baseball Classic, he was the main DH for China (Wei Wang being the catcher), going 2 for 6 with a walk, two runs and a RBI. Only Ray Chang had a better OPS among China's starters. He scored their first run of the Classic, singling off Japan's Tetsuya Yamaguchi as a pinch-hitter in the 9th inning and scoring on a wild pitch. In their last game, he ensured a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic; with China down 2-0 in the 8th against Brazil, he started a 5-run rally with a single off Murilo Gouvea. After scoring a run, he drove in the last run of the inning with a bases-loaded walk from Hugo Kanabushi. He also played in the 2013 East Asian Games.
Meng was 3 for 7 with two walks, hit-by-pitch, a run and a RBI in the 2014 Asian Games, backing up Xiaolei Du at 3B and Wang at catcher and also playing some DH. He was one of China's top offensive performers. He and Wang had the only Chinese hits in a loss to Japan's Ryota Sekiya. In the 2015 Asian Championship, he was 1 for 7 with a run and a RBI but had two errors in 11 chances behind the plate, splitting time with Wang.
