Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Uriak Marquez played in the minor leagues and winter leagues from 2001 to 2020, with two long interruptions during that span. He was in the Chicago Cubs organization until 2004, playing with the Boise Hawks of the Pioneer League in 2003, where he hit .239/.277/.388 in 52 games. In 2004, he was with three different teams: Boise, the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League and the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League. In a combined 58 games, he hit .251/.269/.363. Before coming to the U.S., he had played in the Venezuelan Summer League in 2001 and the Dominican Summer League in 2002, but statistics are unavailable.
He was let go by the Cubs following the 2004 season and did not returned to professional baseball until 2010, when he was with the Shreveport-Bossier Captains of the American Association. He hit .260 in 61 games, then in 2011 split the season between Shreveport-Bossier and the El Paso Diablos in the same league, batting .300 in 90 games. In a third season in the circuit in 2012, he was with El Paso and the Laredo Lemurs and hit .258 in 81 games (in a statistical curiosity, his batting average was exactly .258 at each of the two stops). He then had a second lengthy hiatus in his career.
When Uriak resurfaced, he was playing in the Mexican League with the Olmecas de Tabasco in 2016. On May 18th, in a game begun the previous evening, he put an end to a marathon game when he drove in Adrian Gutierrez with a single off Manuel Nunez of the Rojos del Aguila de Veracruz in the 23rd inning. The two teams had been locked up in a 5-5 tie since the 7th inning until his hit. In all, the game lasted 7 hours and 34 minutes, ending in the small hours of the morning, and it tied two other Mexican League contests, one in 1977 and one in 2001, for the longest game in the circuit's history. He hit .248 in 61 games for Tabasco before finishing the year with the Acereros de Monclova, where he batted .326 in 25 games. In 2017, he was with the Toros de Tijuana, but only appeared in 2 games, going 0 for 4. In 2018, he again split his season between two teams - apparently a specialty for him - in this case the Piratas de Campeche and the Saraperos de Saltillo. In 34 games, he hit .214. His last known appearances came in the Venezuelan League in the winter of 2019-20, when he played 5 games for the Tigres de Aragua, coming back to his native county of Venezuela a full two decades after the start of his professional career.
