Biographical Information

Tyler Waldron has pitched as high as AAA.

Waldron was 7-2 with a 1.13 ERA and 110 K in 56 IP as a high school junior, hitting .537. His senior year, he hit .530 and went 11-0 with a 0.65 ERA, 151 K to 17 BB in 76 IP. He also wrestled in high school. The Florida Marlins took him in the 38th round of the 2007 amateur draft but he opted for college. He was 3-7 with a 5.20 ERA in one year at the University of the Pacific then transferred to Oregon State. He had a 6-4, 4.15 record his sophomore year and 4-6, 5.90 as a junior. The Pittsburgh Pirates chose him in the 5th round of the 2010 amateur draft; Greg Hopkkins was the scout. He was one of 9 pitchers the Bucs took in the first 10 rounds, following Jameson Taillon, Stetson Allie, Mel Rojas Jr. (the lone position player) and Nick Kingham.

He was 4-7 with a 3.90 ERA in his pro debut for the State College Spikes, walking only 11 in 64 2/3 IP. He tied for the most losses in the New York-Penn League. In 2011, he was with the West Virginia Power (7-6, 4.82) and Bradenton Marauders (4-1, 4.25). He was third among Pittsburgh minor leaguers in wins, behind only Phil Irwin and Kyle McPherson, but he led with 14 wild pitches. The next year, he pitched for Bradenton (7-8, 5.09) and the Altoona Curve (1-2, 4.05), allowing an average over .300 in the pitcher-friendly Florida State League. He tied for 4th in the Pirates chain in losses, led in hits allowed (20 more than #2 Brandon Cumpton), was second to Shairon Martis in earned runs (80 to 77) and was second to Matt Benedict in total runs (93 to 86).

He battled injuries in 2013 and only got into 13 games for Bradenton (1-0, 2 Sv, 7.88) and Altoona (0-3, 4.81). He was left unprotected but was unclaimed in the 2013 Rule V Draft. He started 2014 strong, with only 7 hits, four walks and one run in 21 2/3 IP while fanning 24.
