Biographical information

Kyle McPherson was added to the Pittsburgh Pirates' 40-man roster in 2010, just 3 years after a horrid end to his collegiate career. He made his major league debut in 2012.

McPherson was 1-7 with a 6.07 ERA his junior year of college, though he did hit .302 as a part-time infielder. The Pirates took him in the 14th round of the 2007 amateur draft on the advice of scout Darren Mazeroski. He split the remainder of the summer between the GCL Pirates (4-2, 2.61, 10 BB in 51 2/3 IP) and State College Spikes (0-1, 6.28). He was 9th in the Gulf Coast League in ERA, the only GCL Pirate hurler to finish in the top 10.

In 2008, Kyle went 1-3 with a save and a 4.37 ERA for State College, with a mere 5 walks in 55 2/3 IP. On the other hand, he served up 10 gopher balls, leading the New York-Penn League. He split 2009 between State College (4-3, 2.99, 11 BB in 75 1/3 IP) and the West Virginia Power (5-2, 4.94, 6 BB in 51 IP). He had the third-lowest walk rate among NYPL starters.

The Alabaman hurler split 2010 between West Virginia (9-9, 3.59, 1.08 WHIP) and the Bradenton Marauders (4 shutout innings, 7 whiffs). The Pirates added him to their 40-man roster in November. He was named the Pirates' minor league pitcher of the year in 2011 when he was 12-6, 2.96 in 28 starts between Bradenton and the AA Altoona Curve. He missed some time with injuries in 2012, but got to play in AAA for the first time, with the Indianapolis Indians. He was called up to Pittsburgh after the Bucs had exhausted their pitching staff in a 19-inning marathon on August 19th. He made his debut against the San Diego Padres the next day, coming in relief in the 6th inning. In his first big league inning, he struck out two batters while keeping the Padres off the scoreboard, then pitched a perfect 7th inning for a very impressive first outing in which he mixed a 96 mph fastball with a sharp curve.
