Tony Muser played parts of nine seasons in the majors with four different clubs. After his major league playing days ended, he played with the Seibu Lions in Japan in 1979.

After spending several years managing in the minors, Muser was a Milwaukee Brewers coach from 1985 to 1989, a Brewers scout in 1990, and a member of the Chicago Cubs coaching staff from 1993 to 1997. He became manager of the Kansas City Royals in the middle of the 1997 season and remained with them until 2002. From 2003 to 2006, he was the San Diego Padres bench coach. In 2007, he returned to the minors as skipper of the AZL Padres. In 2008 and 2009, Muser was the Padres' minor league hitting coordinator.

While third base coach for Milwaukee in 1986, Muser was severely burned in a fire at the Brewers' spring training complex.
