Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Tom LeVasseur was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 8th round of the 1986 amateur draft. Assigned to the Spokane Indians, LeVasseur hit .372/~.496/.414 with 28 SB and 50 runs in 53 games. He won the Northwest League batting title, made the post-season all-star team, and was rated the #6 prospect in the league by Baseball America. He then moved up the Padre chain one year at a time. He hit .275/~.365/.308 for the Reno Padres in 1987 and .284/~.375/.342 for the Riverside Red Wave in 1988. He was reduced to part-time work in 1989-1990, hitting .270/~.353/.361 for the Wichita Wranglers and .218/~.314/.339 for the Las Vegas Stars.
He then spent three seasons in Italy. He hit .380/.488/.620 for Novara in 1991, with 29 walks, 35 runs and 23 steals (caught only twice) in 35 games, while fielding .962 at SS. He tied for 8th in the high-offense Serie A1 in runs, was 5th in walks and tied Tony Brown for first in steals. In 1992, he hit .358/.453/.490, stole 18 bases in 22 tries and had 32 runs and 12 doubles in 36 games while again fielding .962. He was third in swipes behind Jim Walewander and Enrico Vecchi and tied for third in doubles. Moving to Crocetta Parma in 1993, he batted .355/.454/.507 with 24 walks, 25 runs and 26 steals (in 31 tries) over 36 games, while fielding .977 at SS. He led in steals by 5 over Claudio Liverziani and tied for 7th in walks.
LeVasseur returned to the Western Hemisphere in 43 games for the Calgary Cannons in 1994, possibly as a player/coach, hitting .246/~.301/.333 and appearing at every position except pitcher.
LeVasseur managed in the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres chains from 1995 to 2000 and scouted for the Cincinnati Reds in 2001-2002.
