December 23: Today's featured birthday is that of Tim Harkness, who turns 87.
- 1884 - Tony Mullane (pictured) signs with the Cincinnati Red Stockings despite having made a verbal commitment to another team. The American Association bans Mullane for the 1885 campaign.
- 1963 - Akira Takahashi wins his second game of the 1963 Japan Series, 18-4 over Kazuhisa Inao, as the Yomiuri Giants batter Inao and company. Four Giants homer in the Game 7 win, including Sadaharu Oh.
- 1979 - In a match-up of two teams that had never won a Japan Series, the Hiroshima Carp top the Kintetsu Buffaloes in seven games in the 1979 Japan Series. Carp shortstop Yoshihiko Takahashi is named Series MVP.
- 2001 - The 2001 World Series ends with yet another dramatic game. In the bottom of the 9th, Yankees closer Mariano Rivera blows a 2-1 lead as Tony Womack doubles in Midre Cummings to tie it and Luis Gonzalez singles in Jay Bell with the winner.
- 2009 - The Yankees win their 27th World Series, beating the Phillies 4-2 in the 2009 World Series. Hideki Matsui drives in a Series-record six runs in the finale and is named World Series MVP.
