December 28: Today's featured birthday is that of Melvin Nieves, who turns 53.
- 1926 - Tris Speaker steps down as manager of the Cleveland Indians under accusations of having thrown games.
- 1962 - The American Association folds after 61 seasons of operation as one of the top three minor leagues. The surviving teams join the Pacific Coast League and International League. The AA will be revived later in the decade.
- 1971 - The Cincinnati Reds pick up future two-time MVP Joe Morgan along with Cesar Geronimo (pictured) and Jack Billingham from the Houston Astros in exchange for Lee May, Tommy Helms and Jimmy Stewart. On the same day, Gaylord Perry, Sam McDowell, Rick Monday and Ken Holtzman are also traded.
- 1993 - Hiromi Matsunaga declares his rights as a free agent. He will become the first player to switch teams under NPB's new free agency rules, joining the Daiei Hawks.
- 2002 - The Cincinnati Reds agree to trade Ken Griffey, Jr. to the San Diego Padres for Phil Nevin but Nevin exercises his no-trade clause to halt the deal.
