February 27: Today's featured birthday is that of Pete Smith, who turns 59.
- 1933 - Despite having just won the Triple Crown, Chuck Klein is traded by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Cincinnati Reds for Mark Koenig, Harvey Hendrick, Ted Kleinhans and $125,000. Klein is the only player to be dealt after a Triple Crown campaign.
- 1956 - Don Newcombe (pictured) wins the National League MVP Award. He will also win the first ever Cy Young Award in a few days.
- 1970 - Tommie Agee becomes the first player to win a Gold Glove in both the National League and American League.
- 1972 - Carlton Fisk is the first unanimous winner of the Rookie of the Year Award in the American League. He hit .293 with 22 home runs.
- 1991 - In a surprise vote, Terry Pendleton beats out Barry Bonds for the National League MVP Award.
