- 1955 - The Chicago Cubs sell pitcher Dave Cole to the Philadelphia Phillies. He remarks "That's too bad. They're the only team I can beat."
- 1961 - Rookie Carl Yastrzemski is declared the new Boston Red Sox left fielder, replacing recently retired Ted Williams in one of the most famous instances of one Hall of Famer succeeding another.
- 1988 - Suguru Egawa has his retirement game in the first contest ever played at the Tokyo Dome.
- 2009 - Japan beats South Korea, 6-2, in their fourth matchup of the 2009 World Baseball Classic to earn the Championship. Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka is named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, in a repeat of 2006.
- 2013 - The Dominican Republic wins the 2013 World Baseball Classic, topping Puerto Rico, 3-0, in the finale. Robinson Canó (pictured) is named Classic MVP after setting a WBC record with 15 hits, while Samuel Deduno and three relievers combine on a three-hit shutout for the game.
