January 4: Today's featured birthday is that of Paul Gibson, who turns 65.
- 1915 - The Baltimore Orioles (IL) vacate Baltimore, MD, moving to Richmond, VA to become the Richmond Virginians, out of fear of Federal League competition. From 1903 to 1953, it will be the only season in which the International League has no presence in the city.
- 1939 - Eddie Collins, George Sisler (pictured) and Wee Willie Keeler are elected to the Hall of Fame.
- 1962 - After decades of being a minor league powerhouse, the Southern Association disbands. One of the few leagues never to integrate, it had suffered falling attendance levels for years.
- 1990 - Isao Harimoto, the only 3,000-hit man in Nippon Pro Baseball history, is voted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame.
- 2000 - D'Angelo Jimenez breaks his neck in a car crash and will miss the entire season.
