- 1923 - Former pitcher Wild Bill Donovan, currently manager of the New Haven Profs, dies in a train wreck.
- 1925 - Rogers Hornsby wins the 1925 National League Most Valuable Player Award.
- 1965 - The Cincinnati Reds deal Frank Robinson to the Baltimore Orioles for Milt Pappas, Jack Baldschun and Dick Simpson. Robinson will win MVP honors his first year with the Orioles.
- 1973 - The Cuban national team wins the 1973 Amateur World Series run by FIBA. Agustín Marquetti is named MVP.
- 1980 - The Chicago Cubs trade last year's Cy Young Award winner Bruce Sutter (pictured) to the St. Louis Cardinals for Leon Durham, Ken Reitz and a player to be named later.
