- 1914 - The New York Yankees are sold to Jacob Ruppert and Tillinghast L'Hommedieu Huston, ushering in the team's growth as a competitive franchise.
- 1966 - The Atlanta Braves trade Braves icon Eddie Mathews and two other players to the Houston Astros for Dave Nicholson and Bob Bruce.
- 1972 - Roberto Clemente dies in a plane crash while delivering hurricane relief supplies to Nicaragua.
- 1974 - Free agent Catfish Hunter (pictured) signs a five-year, $3.75 million dollar contract with the New York Yankees, giving him a salary more than three times that of any other major league player.
- 1990 - Carney Lansford badly injures his knee in a snowmobile accident and will miss almost the entire 1991 campaign.
