- 1891 - The American Association disbands, having been a major league for ten years, with four teams joining the National League. It is the third-longest duration of a major league.
- 1924 - The New York Yankees pick up Urban Shocker from the St. Louis Browns in exchange for Milt Gaston, Joe Giard and Joe Bush.
- 1932 - The Cincinnati Reds acquire Jim Bottomley (pictured) from the St. Louis Cardinals for Ownie Carroll and Estel Crabtree.
- 1953 - In a tax avoidance scheme, the New York Yankees sell off Yankee Stadium and the land on which it sits, and immediately lease it back.
- 2003 - Seeking to extend their dynasty, the Yankees sign seven-time All-Star Gary Sheffield, a top free agent.
