• 1932 - The Cincinnati Reds acquire Jim Bottomley (pictured) from the St. Louis Cardinals for Ownie Carroll and Estel Crabtree.
• 1953 - In a tax avoidance scheme, the New York Yankees sell off Yankee Stadium and the land on which it sits, and immediately lease it back.
• 2003 - Seeking to extend their dynasty, the Yankees sign seven-time All-Star Gary Sheffield, a top free agent.
