January 8: Today's featured birthday is that of Brian Boehringer, who turns 56.
- 1906 - Johnny Bates becomes the first major leaguer in the modern era to homer in his first at-bat. The Boston hitter knocks his shot off Harry McIntire.
- 1916 - In the rare trade of an inner circle Hall of Famer in his prime, Tris Speaker (pictured) is dealt by the Boston Red Sox to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for $55,000, Sam Jones and Fred Thomas.
- 1955 - In their first game following their relocation, the Kansas City Athletics win a 6-2 decision over Detroit.
- 1966 - The Atlanta Braves, formerly of Milwaukee, make their debut and Joe Torre homers twice, but no one else scores and they lose in extra innings, 3-2, when Willie Stargell goes deep for the Pirates.
- 1992 - Red Sox hurlers Matt Young and Roger Clemens set a MLB record by allowing a combined two hits in the course of a doubleheader against the Indians. Young does not allow a hit in eight innings in the opener, but loses 2-1, while Clemens flings a two-hitter to win the nightcap.
