Tatsuya Shimizu has pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball.
Shimizu represented Japan in the 2017 U-18 Baseball World Cup, posting a 1.17 ERA. [1] The Chunichi Dragons drafted him in the fourth round of the 2017 NPB draft. .[2] Shimizu spent his first four seasons primarily in the NPB Farm Leagues; he only pitched 7 games combined for the big club. He became an important part of the their bullpen in 2022, and he recorded a 3.04 ERA in 54 games while notching 32 holds. Shimizu ranked 5th in holds in the Central League, 11 behind Atsuki Yuasa. When Yariel Rodriguez left the team, he was named their new setup pitcher, and he collected 25 holds with a 3.09 ERA in 50 games in 2023. Shimizu ranked 5th in holds, 14 behind Sotaro Shimauchi.
The Saitama native then made it onto Japan's roster for the 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championship. He relieved Shunsuke Sato in the 8th inning against Australia, and he retired Jake Burns then struck out Alex Skepton and Jesse Williams to close the game. Japan beat South Korea in the title game and won Gold.[3]
Shimizu's repertoire features a fastball that peaks at 96.3 mph and a forkball.[4]
