Tampico is located at the southern edge of the eastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, across the Rio Panuco from the state of Veracruz and next to Ciudad Madero. It is a port on the Gulf of Mexico and at the center of Mexico's oil industry, 125 miles north of Poza Rica.
