Biographical Information

Takumi Oshiro has played in Nippon Pro Baseball and for the Japanese national team.

After college, Oshiro joined NTT West in the industrial leagues. He played for Japan in the 2017 Asian Championship; Yuki Yamauchi wound up doing most of the catching with Oshiro used at DH instead. He hit .231/.333/.308 with two runs and two RBI in four games. He broke up a scoreless duel in the 8th against defending champion South Korea, drawing a walk from Jung-bin Kim and coming home on a hit by Tsubasa Irei. In the Gold Medal Game, he hit 6th and played DH, going 0 for 4 in a 6-1 win over host Taiwan.

The Yomiuri Giants took him in the 3rd round of the 2017 NPB draft. He debuted on Opening Day, pinch-hitting for Tomoyuki Sugano in the 7th and singling off Randy Messenger of Hanshin. He stayed in at catcher as starter Seiji Kobayashi had been lifted for a pinch-hitter a batter prior (that pinch-hitter was incidentally a teammate of his at the 2017 Asian Championship - Shunta Tanaka). He got his first home run April 8 when he took Hirofumi Yamanaka deep. After 34 plate appearances, he was hitting .250/.294/.375.

On June 3, 2020, he was one of two Yomiuri Giants players, with Hayato Sakamoto, the team's biggest star, whose antibodies test for the coronavirus came back positive. This forced the cancellation of that day's practice game and the formal testing of everyone on the team who had been in contact with the players. He was hospitalized as a preventive measure, and the whole incident put the presumptive resumption of the NPB season, scheduled for June 12th, in question.
