Biographical Information[edit]

Randy Messenger was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 11th round of the 1999 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Wally Walker and made his pro debut that summer.

Messenger has pitched four seasons in the major leagues. After signing a minor league contract with the Mariners, he impressed during spring training with the 2009 Mariners but did not make the major league club out of spring training. He has been pitching in relief for the 2009 Tacoma Rainiers.

Messenger has pitched nine seasons in the minors through 2008, going 46-34, although most of his appearances have been as a reliever. In 2004 he had 21 saves for Carolina.

Messenger signed with the Hanshin Tigers for 2010 upon the recommendation of Mariners teammate Kenji Johjima, who had also signed with Hanshin. He debuted on March 26, Opening Day, tossing a 1-2-3 8th inning against the Yokohama BayStars to set up closer Kyuji Fujikawa.
