Biographical Information

Catcher Steve Holm was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 17th round of the 2001 amateur draft and made his pro debut that year with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes. After hitting .208 in 2001, he returned to the Volcanoes the next summer and hit just .172. He moved on to the Hagerstown Suns in 2003 and batted .220. With the San Jose Giants the following season, he improved to a .259 average and hit 9 homers (after hitting just 1 in his first three pro seasons).

In 2005, Holm began the year with the Augusta Greenjackets, where he hit .233 with 5 homers and 31 RBIs before being promoted to the AA Norwich Navigators for 11 games late in the season. He put up his best numbers the following summer in another stint at an Jose, going .258 with a team-best 15 home runs. He played for the AA Connecticut Defenders in 2007 and hit .272 with 9 home runs.

During Spring Training in 2008, Holm unexpectedly earned a spot on the Giants big league roster as a back-up to Benjie Molina. Despite never playing above the AA level, manager Bruce Bochy cited Holm's ability to handle a pitching staff as the key reason he made the team.

On the occasion of his first big-league hit, Holm was robbed of an extra-base when his line drive off Ben Sheets on April 6th at Miller Park ticked off the glove of the diving Bill Hall and struck third base umpire Tim Welke standing in foul territory.

Holm was an assistant coach at California State University, Sacramento in 2013-2016 and Purdue University in 2017-2018. He became head coach at Illinois State University in 2019.
