Biographical Information[edit]
Steve Connelly starred at the University of Oklahoma and was a member of the team that won the 1994 College World Series. Connelly was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 24th round of 1995 Amateur Draft and pitched four seasons in the A’s organization (1995-1998). He made his Major League debut in 1998 and posted a 1.93 ERA (0-0 record) in three relief appearances with Oakland. Connelly also played four minor league seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization with the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League (1999-2001, 2003).
After retiring, Connelly served as pitching coach for the University of Alabama-Huntsville from 2011 to 2013. In 2014, he moved to the A's system as pitching coach for the Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York-Penn League. He moved to the Beloit Snappers in 2015, to the Stockton Ports from 2016-2017, and the Midland Rockhounds from 2018-2019. The 2019 RockHounds staff had the fifth-lowest earned run average in the franchise’s 48-year history (3.92) and was the first to post a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of more than three-to-one (3.02). He was scheduled to return to Midland in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19, then did coach Midland again in 2021. Connelly moved up to the Las Vegas Aviators in 2022. He became the Minor League Assistant Pitching Rehab Coordinator for the A's in 2023 and returned in that role in 2024.
Connelly also has some experience in offseason leagues. He was the pitching coach for the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League after the 2015, 2017, and 2021 seasons. In addition, Connelly spent a partial season in the Dominican League during the 2020/2021 season. On December 1st Connelly replaced Phil Regan as pitching coach for the Toros del Este.
