Biographical information

Steve Powers was a designated hitter/pitcher who is most notable for winning the 1976 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a senior at University of Arizona. He is one of three players from University of Arizona to win that award. The others are Terry Francona and Mike Senne.

In 1975, he was selected in the eighth round of the amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers, but he never signed with them. He then played for Team USA when they won the Gold Medal in the 1975 Intercontinental Cup and the Silver Medal in the 1975 Pan American Games. In one 1976 draft, he was taken in the second round by the Philadelphia Phillies. In another 1976 draft, he was taken in the first round - 18th overall, by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Powers debuted with the Salem Pirates. He hit .258/.417/.379 in 29 games as a DH/OF. On the mound, he went 4-3 with a 2.35 ERA in 10 outings. In 1977, he was back with Salem, hitting .308/.391/.436 while spending most of his time on the mound. His pitching record was 4-9, 4.70. He played professionally until 1978, going 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA and 9 walks in 9 innings in three games for the Waterloo Indians that year.

He was inducted into the University of Arizona Hall of Fame in 1994.
