Previously known as the Salem Rebels, the Salem Pirates played in the Carolina League as an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1972 to 1980. The team won league titles in 1972 and 1974 and over the years featured future Pittsburgh stars such as Dave Parker. In 1981, the club became a farm team of the San Diego Padres and became known as the Salem Redbirds.
